Samuel D. Hinman graduated from Seabury Divinity School, Faribault, Minnesota, in 1860 and was ordained by Bishop Whipple. He was a missionary at the Lower Sioux Agency, ca. 1861-ca. 1862, and left for the Dakota Territory following the Dakota Conflict of 1862. Hinman served as an Indian missionary in Dakota Territory and later in life returned to Minnesota where he served until his death in 1890.
